Home / Meet the team / Dr Kathy Thwaites
I am registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
My qualifications are:
I have experience working within NHS Mental Health services and NHS Health Psychology services. More recently I have also worked within the private sector for services offering staff support for teachers and a weight management service, before moving fully into private practice. I work with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, psychological trauma / PTSD, sexual trauma and abuse, interpersonal and relationship difficulties, difficulties with eating and weight management, Chronic Pain, Chronic Fatigue and adjusting to long-term health conditions.
I enjoy working with the range of difficulties outlined above and have a particular interest in the way that our physical and mental health can interact, in particular regarding psychological trauma, living with chronic health conditions and eating / weight management.
My main therapeutic approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) but I also draw on ideas from Compassion Focused Therapy ( CFT) and am trained in Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing ( EMDR). I find it helpful to think with you about the type of approach that you might find helpful depending on your hopes for therapy and the areas you are hoping to change.
I see therapy as an opportunity to think with someone else in a respectful and open manner in order to understand why certain difficulties have arisen, as well as being an opportunity to develop new skills and coping strategies to help us improve our quality of life.
